We see some amazing trees and stop at one large elephant tree. Its trunk and lower branches are a weaving of smaller rootlike branches looking like a bad dream Giger might have had. Despite this I decide to step into the vast hollow we discover in the trunk. I can step inside easily and the cavity is spacey dark and cool. I have read how these can make good storage areas, protected from rain.
I grin out at Rosemary’s camera as I put my hand onto the trunk to find it is soft. My hand recoils as I realise it is covered in large, hairy two-inch caterpillars with black and white stripes and bright red heads. I look around my little room and realise all the walls are alive with hundreds of caterpillars. It doesn’t take me long to leap back out into the field and start brushing myself down.

I haven't really talked here about leylop's blog for a while, but it is still going strong. She has loads of photos up at the moment, with some really interesting commentary. There's a really fucking excellent entry a few days ago about her first experience of going to a christian church. It's so easy, even though you know hypothetically that the world is a strange and wonderful place, just to make complacent assumptions about things like this. I was not brought up with any religion. But, I went to a christian secondary school, and trips to cathedrals, churches were always a part of that, as well as exciting 'cultural' excersions in their own right :)
One memorable occasion: I must have been about 14 maybe 15, and me and my friend Xandrija went to Malta together, stayed with her family, etc etc. Her mother is very religious. So, we had to go to mass before we got on the plane. I had never been to any sort of catholic ceremony thing before. It was weird and alien, and I was obnoixiously 14 and sat reading some god awful sci fi book through the whole thing :) Christianity has always been the status quo: even on our secular and spectacularly unreligious little country, there are churches dotted about pretty much everywhere, we took (largely judeo-christian centred) religous studies in school, and even in my own aquaintance I do occasionally run into someone who believes something (other than that the oppressed of the world have nothing to loose but their chains :) ). This is actually quite an interesting reversal of that, actually :) Anyway, my point is this is a totally fucking radical take on this, check it out.
